RYA Day Skipper Shorebased - Navigation and Safety

Day Skipper Shorebased - A 40 hour course covering Coastal Navigation, Seamanship and Meteorology. It is recommended that you complete the shorebased component before completing the Day Skipper Practical. The course is divided into 2 modules that can be completed in any order but must be finished by September. (RYA Course Packs are updated on Sept 1st each year). If you are unable to complete the course by September you will be required to purchase a new course pack.
Module 1: Meteorology and Seamanship Course - 2 days or 6 evenings
Module 2: Coastal Navigation Course - 3 days or 8 evenings
RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Course
Previous Experience Required - None essential but a minimum of RYA Start Yachting practical recommended.
Ability After Course – Background theoretical knowledge of coastal navigation, seamanship, safety and meteorology to skipper a small vessel in familiar waters by day.
This theoretical course is designed for beginner and intermediate level sailors. It is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to navigate a coastline or make decisions on board. It is strongly recommended that you have completed this course prior to commencing the Day Skipper Practical Course.
Course Duration
Approximately 40 hours of classroom tuition, plus 2-3 hours for the assessment papers which can be done in one of the following ways:
- Evening classes - Module 1: 6 weeks & Module 2 : 8 weeks @ 3 hours a week
- Weekend classes – Module 1 : 2 days & Module 2: 3 days @ 8-9 hours a week (one full day each weekend)
- 5 Day Intensive – 5 consecutive days 8-9 hours each day
